I have 4 kids and they are capable of helping around the house, but they need direction. I don't really have the time or desire to find, search and print fancy chore charts, especially if they are not exactly what I'm looking for. And, my kids don't seem to care if their charts are handwritten or professionally designed.
So, I present to you a realistic chore chart that you can make in less than a minute, customized to your specific needs.
It's not especially glamorous or the most aesthetically pleasing, but, Susie (5 years old) knows exactly what she needs to do, and she is in charge of getting it done.
This truly took about 30 seconds to come up with. My goal is to get my kids to keep their rooms tidy and practice a bit of dental hygiene, but your chart might include things like unloading the dishwasher, folding clothes, walking the dog, etc.
Truly, kids under 8 don't seem to mind the handwritten, sloppy chart. Susie likes that she gets to put princess stickers next to the chores and more importantly, it makes her responsibilities to the family official. Every morning, she knows what she is expected to do and that consistency is very helpful.
As with most feats in parenting, setting expectations, following through and being consistent are the ways to be successful.
I've done the same charts with my 7 year old and 3 year old and we are off to a great start!
How do you get your kids to pitch in?
